Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)

Wasps are generally a nuisance, particularly when the nest is in close proximity or within buildings. Early on in the year, they collect insects, including caterpillars, to take back to their colony. They feed the insects to the larvae and in return get a sugary reward.  However, once their colony is fully grown, there no rewards . For this reason, they appear on our picnic table, hungry for their sugary fix!

Wasps are social insects. They form colonies inside nests specially constructed, normally in soil banks, roof spaces and cavities in trees and walls. Nests formed of paper, (chewed wood), usually become very large. Colonies only survive one season in the UK. New ones are started in the Spring by overwintered queens. By late summer, the normal wasps nest will usually contain from 3000 to 5000 individuals and be up to 30cm across.
